Preparing for REACH legislation

Lucite International (LI) has produced a brand new guide to help its customers and partners understand the impact of REACH, the new legislation designed to protect human health and the environment from the potential hazards caused by working with some chemicals which comes into force on 1 June 2007. Called ‘REACH, THE NEW LEGISLATION AND YOU’, the booklet explains the various steps involved in the Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals for manufacture or use in the European Union. It also contains a detailed timetable of critical dates, which will help ensure companies in the industry are aware of what needs to be done and by when.

Knowing about the planned legislation since 1998 has given LI a head start in preparing for the impact of REACH. The Company has successfully lobbied on a number of important issues via the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC), initiated on-going research to protect its own methacrylate chemistry, worked with customers and suppliers to assess the implications of the new legislation and looked at preparations for REACH in a wider context. Fiona Smith was appointed LI’s dedicated Regulatory and Registration Manager in May 2006 and is responsible for guiding the Company through the activities required to ensure compliance to the new legislation.
