Winner of ‘Best New Car Park’ award features Perspex®
Millennium Point in central Birmingham, UK presents a very different image to the traditional view of car parks. And it all comes down to a visionary city council which chose to work with Perspex® Frost from Lucite International (LI) and has now won the 2012 award for the Best New Car Park in the UK.
Birmingham’s new, multi-storey car park, featuring Perspex® Frost is a welcome addition to the skyline and will help to stimulate the regeneration of the area. The car park, adjacent to the existing landmark Millennium Point, forms part of Birmingham City Council’s multi-million pound ‘Big City Plan’, which includes the creation of a new City Park. This important urban regeneration programme is gradually transforming residential, business and shopping areas and the Council considers the provision of high quality car parking facilities key to attracting local workers, commuters and visitors into the city.
The Millennium Point multi storey car park is strikingly different and was conceived by Acivico, Design Construction & FM, (formerly Urban Design), a multi-disciplinary consultancy that provides design and construction services to the public sector. Acivico’s ethos is to create innovative building solutions that also meet key health and safety, value and sustainability criteria.
With such demanding considerations, choosing the right construction materials is always crucial and Acivico’s Project Architect had complete confidence in specifying Perspex®. He said: “We chose Perspex® for a number of reasons: first, it looked good and worked well with the palette of materials we were using. Its translucency helped transmit natural light during the day and the building’s internal lighting at night. It was also extremely easy to work with and cost-effective, as we were able to use full size panels which meant there was no waste.”
The use of Perspex® has helped create a well-lit, welcoming space for 1000 cars, which can be parked safely day and night.
