Colacryl® and Lucite® brands – a strong heritage and proven track record

We have been supplying our interleavant brands, Colacryl® and Lucite®, to the world’s major glass companies since the early 1980s. Several key factors have contributed to our success to date:

  • Direct relationships with float glass producers has enabled the development of bespoke products that meet the needs of local production and specific applications
  • Ability to closely control particle size, composition and distribution for secure storage and transportation, giving us the ultimate flexibility to tailor solutions.

Products designed for optimum performance

The Pennsylvania State University carried out experimental work with Lucite® bead polymers and identified that a number of organic acids could be used to modify interleavants as a means of controlling the surface pH. For optimum performance and taking into consideration health and safety and economic factors we have confined our products to the use of Adipic Acid for the best all round solution.

Interleavants must also maintain a sufficient airflow between sheets of freshly produced float glass to prevent capillary induced condensation and to maintain the surface pH of the glass below pH9. In addition to helping to maintain surface conditions and preventing staining, our Colacryl® and Lucite® interleavants prevent surface abrasion during transit.

Sustainability presents new opportunities for even better solutions

Lucite® and Colacryl® interleavants are simply washed off at the point of installation and the waste is considered non-hazardous, which means it can be disposed of in accordance with local regulations. Opting for incineration enables the energy value to be recovered.

New challenges have come from many directions, such as the production of architectural glass in the demanding conditions of an autoclave and the protection of hard and soft metal-coated low emissivity glass. Energy conservation has led to the introduction of specialty glasses, which in turn, has required the development of equally specialised Interleavants.
